"POETRY OF SUMMER"

Today I'm showcasing a promising young Minnesota poet by the name of Kendall who reaches down deep inside to write heartfelt poetry.

Dear Pillow ~

I'm sorry for the tears,

I have wept unto you.

Sorry, too, for striking you,

I can never undo.

I'm sorry for the profanity,

I’ve unleashed when mad

Slamming your feathers

Against bones of my wall.

But I do wish to thank you,

Dear pillow friend of mine.

Comforting me like no other,

Absorbing my precious tears

With soft motherly hugs.

You are my teddy bear pal

As I lay my head on your heart.

Sometimes I can’t go on

Or so it seems in a crisis

No one understands me

Sees it from my perspective

But I believe in a forever.

You'll always be there for me.

My hands not for hitting walls

But for caressing the night-tide

Which I lay down beside you

And take refuge in your seams

Lost in your sanctuary of dreams

Dear pillow, dear pillow,

I'm sorry for the stress.

I bring to you each day

If it were not for you,

Sharing my pain, unrest

I’d have nowhere to go

When the volcano smokes

Then blows its molten lava

To flow out of control,

Like rivulets of my tears

Through the floodgates of Hell

While only you—yes, my pillow

Stitched cotton and feathers

Hold me through the storm.

You've comforted me, my pillow

Through all the fears of my years.

If pillows can somehow have hearts

Yours has always been open to me,

When mine's filled with ice for you.

But a warm heart such as yours

Puts rose petals back into my soul

Where a heart was once a stranger

Lost in a maze of summer dreams

Amid notes of broken Pan-pipes

Someday a boy may take my hand

Searching for an archaic music

A spectral evanescent splendor

In purple plumage of spring

And though I may take his hand

Placing this boy ahead of you

Our pillow talk will never diminish

Through heartbreaks and healing,

Fights, forgiveness, and feeling,

Upside down holidays, daily living,

Crazy Christmas or Thanksgiving.

Crying over boys, hurt by friends,

Fights with mom, pain never ends

Suicidal I'm not, because of you

You even befriended my kitten too.

So I thank you once more

Sweet pillow pal of mine

So nice to hug, so soft and fine

All dressed up in sheets of teal

Knit in gold sunlight I can feel

Yes, my dear pillow, I’ll say it again

You are one in a million—

You're my best friend.

Lovely poem Kendall and how old were you when you wrote your first poem?

My first poem was written when I was probably in 3rd grade.

Who is your favorite poet?

My favorite poet would have to be Edgar Allan Poe. I love the fact that he is so deep and emotional and dark. I love reading the depressing, sad, dark poetry and prose rather than the happy, love sick literature.

How many poems have you written?

The number of poems are countless. I love writing poetry whether it's as simple as "Roses are Red, Violets are blue..." to "He hollows from the murky pits of Hell..."

Are you entering your poetry in contests?

I never have, I like to keep to myself mostly. So, no I have never been in a contest although I've been recognized by teachers and the school board for my poetry and writing.

Do you keep a journal for poetry ideas?

My journal is for both poetry and prose. I love both, so if you were to look at my journals there is definitely a mix.

Do you also write prose?

I love writing prose! It calms me down more than anything else!

How did you come up with the idea for this particular poem - "Dear Pillow?"

I was sexually abused by a close family member I should have been able to trust and I wasn't sure how to go about handling it in the right way. I was writing constantly but it wasn't enough to sustain me. I was suicidal and harming myself intentionally so finally my mom stepped in and took me to a mental hospital. I wrote that poem in about four minutes because I was in so much pain it was unbearable. I realized that the [thing] that has helped me through everything, was my pillow, and I felt like I owed it an apology.

Thank you Kendall for allowing me to post your work here. You're beautiful and so is your poetry. Continue to write and the world will be hearing from you again!

"...He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners...to comfort all who mourn, ...and to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning." ~ Isaish 61:1-3
